Toney reflects on a point against Rochdale

26 March 2018

Ivan Toney was impressed with how the team reacted to come from behind and draw 1-1 with Rochdale on Saturday.

The 21-year-old striker, on-loan from Newcastle United, scored his fourth goal since returning to Scunthorpe on loan during the second-half to earn the Iron a point.

Toney revealed what was said at half-time, how impressed he was by Rochdale and reflected on his loan spell so far in an interview with iFollow Iron.

ON HIS FOURTH GOAL FOR UNITED THIS SEASON…
IT:
I have been trying to get on the end of the flick-ons as much as I can. I thought that the game was there for the taking on Saturday, so I was just trying to score for the team and get us closer to three points. Unfortunately, we didn’t get them but we will take a point and move onto the next game.

ON WHAT ROCHDALE OFFERED…
IT:
People are going to think that we have to beat them because they are down at the bottom of the table but, like I have said plenty of times before, anyone can beat anyone in this league. To be fair to them they were effective playing the long ball up to the big man (Calvin Andrew) and he was winning a fair share. It was a tough thing to cope with but the lads have done well and we managed to get a point.

ON WHAT WAS SAID AT HALF-TIME TO CHANGE IT UP…
IT:
We changed formation and we just said: “Lads, we have to go for it. We can’t lose the game.” The lads gave it their all and it unfortunately just wasn’t enough to get the three points.

ON THE WAY THE TEAM REACTED…
IT:
It was good. Obviously, the lads came out and knew what they had to do. We tried to play different types of football, whether it was going long or through them. Credit to them (Rochdale) as they were confident playing it out from the back and they managed to see it through to get a point.

ON WHETHER THE RESULT WAS FAIR IN THE END…
IT:
I would say that it’s a fair result because both teams had their chances. We can’t do anything about it now though so we have to move onto the next game, hopefully win at Oxford and get three points there.

ON HIS LOAN SPELL WITH THE IRON SO FAR…
IT:
It could have gone better if the results had been going our way but the lads are trying hard and I am sure that the results will come.
