Vacancy: Safety Officer

Scunthorpe United Football Club is seeking to appoint a Safety Officer to oversee all aspects of safety and security at the Attis Arena, while leading the Club's wider health and safety management across all areas of the business.

This is an exciting opportunity to join the Club and play a vital role in ensuring the safety of supporters, players, officials, staff, volunteers and visitors on both matchdays and non-matchdays. The successful candidate will be responsible for embedding a positive health and safety culture throughout the organisation, ensuring compliance with statutory obligations and best practice.

The Safety Officer will lead the Club's safety management function, ensuring compliance with all relevant legislation, the Club's General Safety Certificate and the requirements of the football authorities. Working closely with emergency services, the local authority and key stakeholders, the successful candidate will help deliver a safe, secure and welcoming environment for everyone attending the Attis Arena.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will:

• Lead all aspects of the Club's safety and security operations on matchdays and non-matchdays.

• Manage the Club's overall health and safety function, ensuring compliance with all relevant health and safety legislation and regulations.

• Promote a positive health and safety culture across all departments of the Club.

• Ensure compliance with the General Safety Certificate and all applicable statutory requirements.

• Develop, review and maintain the Club's Safety Policy, Health & Safety Policy, Operations Manual and emergency and contingency plans.

• Carry out health and safety audits, inspections and risk assessments across all Club operations, ensuring appropriate control measures are implemented.

• Investigate accidents, incidents and near misses, producing reports and implementing corrective actions where required.

• Plan and manage matchday safety operations, including steward deployment and spectator safety.

• Recruit, train and oversee the Club's stewarding team and support ongoing staff training in health and safety matters.

• Liaise with the police, fire and ambulance services, local authority, National League, Sports Grounds Safety Authority and other key stakeholders.

• Coordinate post-match debriefs and drive continuous improvements in safety management and operational resilience.

• Conduct post-match investigations into safety- and security-related incidents, working in partnership with the Police, the National League, The Football Association and other relevant agencies where appropriate. Prepare detailed reports, collate and preserve evidence, identify lessons learned, and implement recommendations to continually enhance the Club's safety and security arrangements while ensuring compliance with football regulatory requirements.

About You

Applicants should have:

• Experience in safety management within football, sport, events or a comparable operational environment.

• A recognised health and safety qualification, such as NEBOSH General Certificate, NEBOSH National Diploma, or IOSH Managing Safely/Graduate (certified status) or Chartered Membership, or equivalent, is desirable.

• Experience of implementing and managing health and safety systems within an organisation.

• Excellent organisational, communication and leadership skills.

• A sound understanding of sports ground safety legislation, health and safety legislation, and risk management principles.

• The ability to remain calm, make effective decisions under pressure and build positive working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.

• A Level 4 Spectator Safety qualification (or equivalent) is desirable, although candidates working towards the qualification may also be considered.
