The Iron have signed right-back Marnick Vermijl on loan from Championship side Preston North End until the end of the season.

The 26-year-old joins on January Transfer Deadline Day to strengthen United’s defensive options.

The Belgian defender was a youth player at Standard Liege, before he started his senior career with Manchester United.

He made two EFL Cup appearances for the Red Devils, and enjoyed a season-loan spell with NEC Nijmegen before moving to Sheffield Wednesday in February 2015.

He appeared 11 times for the Owls during the remaining months of the 2014-15 season, before joining North End later that year.

In total, he’s made 54 appearances for the Lilywhites so far, scoring four times.

Vermijl has also featured for his country on a number of occasions, playing at all youth levels from Under-17s through to the Under-21s squad, making over 40 appearances for his country, and scoring five goals from defence.
