Forward Tyrone O'Neill has signed a two-year deal to join Scunthorpe United following his departure from Championship side Middlesbrough, the Iron is delighted to announce.

The 21-year-old has been on trial with the club for over a week and scored the winning goal in our 2-1 pre-season friendly victory over Burton Albion on Tuesday night.

He left Boro this summer, after making one senior appearance for them, and has previously impressed for their Under-23s and in loan spells at Hartlepool and Darlington (twice) - the latter of which was curtailed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

First team manager Neil Cox told iFollow Iron: "Tyrone is a lad I've known of for a while. He's been on the bench for Middlesbrough in the Championship a number of times and then went out on loan. When we knew he was available, we got him in to train and he's been excellent. He's a handful and brings the ball to his feet really well. The other night he got one opportunity and scored, and that's the type of player he is.

"He's a strong lad, holds the ball up and is all about the team, not himself, and that's a really good quality he's bringing to the club. It's about everybody around him and he fills in for people when out of position, demands off team mates and also helps them."

The transfer is subject to EFL ratification.
