The Iron have been placed in Group E of the Papa John's Trophy in 2021-22 and will take on Doncaster Rovers, Rotherham United and an invited side, to be drawn on Thursday.

The 48 EFL Clubs were placed into pre-determined Groups prior to the draw with consideration given to ensure travel time is minimised and recovery time is maximised for players.

In addition, if there is a situation where two teams meet in the Group Stages for a second successive season, then the Club who was at home in 2020/21 will play away in 2021/22. All EFL Clubs will play two of their three matches at home in the Group Stages.

United will also face one of the confirmed Invited U21 teams who have been placed in the northern section, as follows:

- Everton
- Leeds United
- Leicester City
- Liverpool
- Manchester City
- Manchester United
- Newcastle United
- Wolves

The Papa John’s Trophy Round One draw will take place live on Sky Sports at 4:30pm on Thursday 24 June.

The respective draws will be available to watch live on Sky Sports with live streams also available on EFL Twitter (@Carabao_Cup / @PapaJohnsTrophy) and EFL.com.
