Speaking to Iron Player, the 6ft 5in centre forward began by saying: “I’m delighted to be here, to be on the journey to hopefully stay up and kick on in the season."
Discussing how the move came around to join United, as well as his time in Scotland at Cove Rangers, he said: “It happened quite quickly, I’d not had long left with Cove, but I’m happy to be back at home with my family.
“It was really good (playing in Scotland) and I really enjoyed it, but it got a bit distant regarding the family. I’m only an hour down the road now so this is perfect.”
The 24-year-old has played across several divisions in his career, starting the journey firstly with Nottingham Forest in the Championship,
Loan moves to Wrexham, Cambridge in League Two and Tranmere back in the National League followed, with a loan made permanent by Aldershot in 2019.
Most recently, McDonagh played in the National League for FC Halifax Town before departing in the summer, where the Irishman moved up to Scotland to play for Cove Rangers in the Scottish Championship.
When asked about if he feels experienced and what he can bring to the side, he revealed: “I’d like to think so. I think I’ll bring a stature up front, hold the ball up well and hopefully get a few goals."
“I’m a target man but I can do the other side if needed, that’s what I’m here to do,” he finished.
When asked to describe the lure of joining United, he said: “My family to be fair, and there’s a massive ambition from the club to get back to where they belong which is what I like. I like pushing for things."
When discussing his personal targets, he confidently said: “Goals. I want goals. I’m here to score goals, otherwise what else is a striker’s job."
McDonagh revealed he attended the game against Bromley last Saturday, the first home game under the new era.
Speaking on his experience of the fixture, he said: “I watched the lads, and it was a great atmosphere. As soon as we got that goal, everyone could see that the ground was bouncing.
“There are good facilities, and it is a good ground. I’ve never played here before, but I’ve been out to see the stands and it is great.”
