Iron defender Conor Townsend is excited on his return to pre-season training and will be working hard to ensure his fitness is as good as it can be for the opening game against AFC Wimbledon at Glanford Park.

The left-back spoke to iFollow Iron after the first couple of days back on the training ground.

ON HIS FIRST DAYS BACK…
CT: We've had testing and proper sessions now. It’s good to get out there and get the first ones out of the way.

ON TRAINING WITH THE NEW FOOTBALLS…
CT: I think you can do running with it disguised into games. The games we do with the footballs are still hard work, it’s not like that’s your respite. It was nice to get them out on the first day and hopefully it will stay that way.

ON THE REMAINDER OF PRE-SEASON…
CT: It’s obviously one of them things you have just got to get through and work hard. Going into the season you need these five-to-six weeks of hard work, so I think all the lads are looking forward to getting stuck in and being fit and healthy come the end of it.

ON THE NORTH FERRIBY FRIENDLY…
CT: It will be nice to get back out there and start playing properly. That’s where you get your fitness from. You can do all the runs in the world, but when you play your games is when you start feeling better in yourself. I think it’s a pretty quick turnaround for a game, but it should be good and get us into it.

ON THE SUNDERLAND HOME WARM-UP GAME…
CT: It’s all about fitness and getting to where we want to be come August 5th, so hopefully everyone comes through with no injuries going into the first game.

ON THE OPENING MATCH OF THE SEASON…
CT: We started last year at home with a good win and hopefully we can do that this year. It will set us off on the right path.
