Rory McArdle says it was the ambition of the club that attracted him to sign for Scunthorpe United.

Speaking in an interview with iFollow Iron after penning a three-year deal, the former Bradford City central defender is looking forward to meeting his new team-mates next week.

ON JOINING THE CLUB…
RM: I’m delighted to have signed. It’s something I’ve been thinking about over the last few weeks. I’ve met the manager for a chat and his objectives are similar ones to what I have. Hopefully we can try and accomplish them and be part of something successful. Scunthorpe did well last year and keep building. If we can try and keep progressing, ultimately that’s where everybody wants to be. If we can go one step further this season then everyone will be happy.

WHAT HE CAN ADD TO THE GROUP…
RM: I’ve been playing in League One for a few years now and have done reasonably well, managing to chip in with a few goals, which is something defenders should always try and do. We want to keep as many clean sheets as possible but if defenders can chip in with goals then that’s going to help us get where we want to be.

WHAT THE MANAGER HAS TOLD HIM…
RM: The gaffer spoke about the ambitions he and the chairman have for the club, and for me to be able to be part of that ticks a big box as well. The club is going in the right direction and he wants to keep it moving forward - that’s ultimately something I want to be part of. The manager wants to build on last year. Scunthorpe weren’t far away from getting promoted and he wants to keep as much of a tightknit group as possible, and build on that really. It’s something I wanted to be part of. The games against Scunthorpe last year were difficult and if I can come in and push everyone on some more then hopefully we’ll get to where we want to be.

NEXT WEEK’S RETURN FOR PRE-SEASON TRAINING…
RM: It’s soon come around. I’m just glad to get in the building now, getting it all done and then just coming in and getting started with the lads next week.
