Iron manager Nick Daws was pleased to round off the side’s pre-season tour of Austria with a win on Saturday evening.

United ran out 3-0 victors against third-division SV Wals-Grünau, with Stephen Humphrys (2) and Conor Townsend getting on the scoresheet.

Speaking to iFollow Iron, Daws said: “It was a different game to the one we had on Wednesday in that they were quite passive and forced us to pass the ball.

“I’m pleased in many ways that it was the case as it gave the players something different to think about. We were patient, but we didn’t get the reward for the amount of chances we created in the first half.”

Fulham loanee Humphrys notched a further brace to add to his two goals against Winterton Rangers a fortnight ago, while the Scunthorpe boss was also pleased to see some hard work come to fruition.

In doing so, the Iron also kept their second successive clean sheet, with both SV Wals-Grünau and Wednesday’s opponents SV Seekirchen falling to score.

“It doesn’t really matter who scores, but I’m please for Stevie,” he continued.

“He got opportunities and took two of them. Conor was bright and got through 90 minutes, which was good and got an excellent individual goal. We started to see some of the patterns and types of play that we have been building on in pre-season.

“We defended well, we kept a clean sheet which is important and we go home from Austria with a win which is great.”

The encounter brings a week-long tour to an end, with the Iron set to return to England to play twice at Glanford Park prior to the Sky Bet League One campaign commencing. Speaking on the trip as a whole, Daws said: “It’s been a challenge. It’s been incredibly hot.

“For the game again, there were really intense temperatures and that’s not something we’ve had in the last couple of years with the abandonment and temporary lapses in play.

“The boys have been excellent again in terms of their application and endeavour to improve and that’s all you can ask. Hopefully everything we’ve done in pre-season will stand us in good stead for the first game.”
