United kept a first clean sheet of the season as they drew 0-0 during the course of 90 minutes, and then won 4-2 on penalties.
He told iFollow Iron: “It’s another situation where we’ve had a chance to see the players in action. I think we showed good bits of play in the whole 90 minutes. We certainly finished the game very strongly.
“We’re a week in the door, so it was an opportunity to see the guys who didn’t play on Saturday. It was a mixture of a team tonight with the rules of the competition in mind.
“The clean sheet gives the back four confidence and the young goalkeeper Flatty (Jonathan Flatt) did very well. There were a lot of good performances and I think it’s like anything, if you’ve been losing a lot of goals recently and you do keep a clean sheet, it will certainly give you a lot of confidence moving forward to the Rochdale game on Saturday.
“(The Checkatrade Trophy) is a competition where you can get to Wembley so we want to try and qualify first and foremost. Winning games is what we’re all about and what we’re looking to strive for.”
In terms of injuries, Black said there were no fresh knocks and the half-time withdrawal of Jordan Clarke for James Perch was planned pre-match.
A week into his tenure as assistant manager, Black continued: “We’ve been very much enjoying it. It’s a club that’s had really good seasons the last two years, qualifying for the play-off semi-finals. We’re delighted to get back involved. We live and breathe football and this is a good club, that gives us an opportunity to build something and hopefully we can be successful.”
