Scunthorpe United is delighted to announce the contract extension of versatile defender Ross Barrows who puts pen to paper on a deal that sees his stay in claret and blue extended for a further year.

Barrows returned to his boyhood club in the Summer of 2023 following his departure from National League side Altrincham. The 26-year-old is traditionally a right-sided defender but has proven his adaptability across the pitch on numerous occasions since his arrival, and this season will be hoping to nail down his position in Andy Butler’s line-up.

After arriving on the back of a lengthy injury, Barrows saw his minutes limit last season with the solid 10-game run in the side that he acquired around this Christmas period being brought to its end as a result of another injury. However, once returning to fitness Barrows enjoyed loan spells at Ilkeston Town and King's Lynn, where he thrived playing in his favoured position.

Following leaving the Iron in his youth career, Barrows would join Halifax where he would break into the first team, during his time at the Shay. He did spend a period of time out on loan at Frickley, where he scored four goals in seven games before having another spell away from the side, this time at North Ferriby.

Barrows would then have a stint at Grantham before signing for King’s Lynn towards the end of the 2018-19 season. In the following season, he would be part of the side which achieved promotion from National League. During their time in the National League, he’d make 58 appearances, scoring four goals.

After impressing he’d then move onto Altrincham for the 2022-23 season and started the campaign strongly, featuring in 13 games - including the 2-2 draw against the Iron - before he suffered an injury in mid-November.

In an interview he expressed his joy to be staying for another year by saying: "I’m absolutely over the moon, there’s no better place to play football and I’m absolutely buzzing to finally get it over the line.

"When I spoke to the gaffer about his plans for next season, it was an no brainer straight away and I just couldn’t wait to get it all sorted."
