2009 promotion-winning goalscorer Martyn Woolford confirms Iron Aid appearance

Scunthorpe United is delighted to welcome back Martyn Woolford as he takes his place in the Iron Legends side for our encounter against Manchester United Legends XI on Sunday, August 2nd (4pm kick-off).

Woolford joined the Iron from York City in August 2008 and quickly became one of Nigel Adkins' most influential attacking players. A hardworking and versatile winger, he combined pace, creativity and an eye for goal, helping the Iron enjoy one of the most successful periods in the club's history.

Woolford played a key role in Scunthorpe's promotion-winning 2008–09 campaign, appearing in both Wembley finals that season. After featuring in the EFL Trophy Final, he produced one of the defining moments of his career by scoring the winning goal and providing two assists in the 3–2 victory over Millwall in the League One play-off Final, securing an immediate return to the Championship. He went on to make 103 league appearances and score 15 goals for the Iron before joining Bristol City in January 2011.

Following his departure from Glanford Park, Woolford enjoyed a lengthy Football League career with Bristol City, Millwall, Sheffield United, Fleetwood Town and Grimsby Town. His decisive Wembley heroics and outstanding contribution under Nigel Adkins ensure he remains one of the most fondly remembered players of Scunthorpe United's modern era.

IRON AID 2026

Scunthorpe United Football Club is delighted to announce the return of Iron Aid, with a Scunthorpe United Legends side set to take on a Manchester United Legends XI in a special pre-season fixture at the Attis Arena on Sunday, August 2nd (4pm kick-off) as part of a wider event with more details to be released in due course.

The highly anticipated event, organised in partnership with Nor-Lait Promotions, will bring together some of the most iconic names from both clubs' histories for a memorable afternoon of football, nostalgia and fundraising.

Iron supporters will once again have the opportunity to see former fan favourites pull on the claret and blue shirt, while a star-studded Manchester United Legends squad promises to attract supporters from across the region.

The match marks the return of the popular Iron Aid concept, which in 2024, as part of the club's 125h anniversary celebrations, raised significant funds for local charities and community causes, whilst creating unforgettable occasions for supporters of all ages.
