2025/26 Season
Andy Butler
First Team Manager
The Iron were pleased to welcome back Andy Butler to the club in the autumn of 2022, when he joined the academy as Youth Development Phase Coach. He returned to Glanford Park for a third spell, having previously represented the club between 2002 and 2008 before a second stint during the 2019-20 campaign. Over the course of a distinguished playing career spanning more than 700 appearances, the former Iron academy graduate featured 174 times for Scunthorpe United. He also gained valuable coaching and managerial experience with Doncaster Rovers Belles, Doncaster Rovers and Peterborough United before returning to the club. In June 2023, Butler was appointed First Team Coach following the departure of Michael Nelson. After a season in the role, he succeeded Jimmy Dean as First Team Manager in May 2024. Since taking charge, Butler has overseen a successful period for the club, guiding the Iron to promotion back to the National League in his first season as manager. In March 2026, he signed a new contract keeping him at the Attis Arena until the summer of 2028.
John Schofield
Assistant Manager
Scunthorpe United welcomed back John Schofield to the club in July 2024, when he was appointed assistant manager to Andy Butler. Schofield returned to the Attis Arena a decade after his previous spell with the Iron, having served as assistant manager to Russ Wilcox during one of the club's most successful periods in recent history. The pair first became teammates at Doncaster Rovers before progressing through their coaching qualifications together. He had also spent a brief period at the club during the 2007-08 season, delivering additional coaching sessions to players outside the first-team squad. Boasting a wealth of experience across the English Football League and international football, Schofield has held coaching and assistant managerial roles at clubs including Cheltenham Town, Cambridge United, Gillingham, Lincoln City, Doncaster Rovers, York City and Peterborough United. In July 2021, he was appointed manager of Northern Ireland Under-21s, a role he held until February 2023 before returning to club football. His most recent position prior to rejoining the Iron came at Port Vale, where he worked alongside former Scunthorpe defender Andy Crosby as assistant manager. Throughout his coaching career, Schofield has built a reputation as an energetic, dedicated and highly respected coach, while also developing a strong working relationship with Andy Butler during their time together at Doncaster Rovers. Alongside Butler, Schofield led the Iron to promotion back to the National League in 2025, and signed a new two-year deal with the club in March 2026.
Paul Musselwhite
Goalkeeping Coach
Paul Musselwhite's return to Scunthorpe United in the summer of 2013 marked his third spell with the club. The former goalkeeper began his professional career with Portsmouth before first joining the Iron in 1988. Over the next four years, he made 132 appearances before moving on to Port Vale, where he would spend eight successful seasons and make more than 300 appearances. Following spells with Hull City and several other clubs, Musselwhite returned to Glanford Park in 2004 and played a key role in the Iron's League Two promotion-winning campaign of 2004-05. After two further seasons with the club, he departed for a second time in the summer of 2006. His playing career continued in non-league football before he moved into coaching, taking up a goalkeeping coach role at Lincoln City. He later joined York City as player-goalkeeping coach and famously kept a clean sheet on his debut in a 1-0 victory over Cambridge United at the age of 43. After a brief spell as goalkeeping coach at Bury, Musselwhite returned to Scunthorpe United in June 2013 to take charge of the club's goalkeepers. Since then, he has become the longest-serving member of the football staff, working under a number of managers and playing an important role in the development of goalkeepers across the club. His experience, loyalty and knowledge of Scunthorpe United have made him a highly respected figure both within the dressing room and throughout the wider football club.
