Iron icon Alex Calvo-Garcia to return to England for Iron Aid encounter on Sunday

Scunthorpe United is delighted to welcome Spanish club legend Alex Calvo-Garcia back to the Attis Arena for our Legends XI encounter for Iron Aid 2026 on Sunday, August 2nd (4pm kick-off).

One of the most iconic players in Scunthorpe United's history, Alex Calvo-Garcia became a cult hero during an eight-year spell with the Iron after arriving from Spanish side Eibar in October 1996. The elegant midfielder quickly won over supporters with his technical ability, intelligence on the ball and unwavering commitment to the club.

Calvo-Garcia made 280 appearances in all competitions, scoring 45 goals, and etched his name into club folklore by scoring the winning goal in the 1999 Third Division Play-Off Final against Leyton Orient at Wembley. That strike secured promotion to the Second Division and remains one of the most celebrated moments in Scunthorpe United's history.

Admired as much for his character as his performances, the Spaniard embraced life in North Lincolnshire and developed a deep connection with the club and its supporters. Following his retirement in 2004, he returned to Spain but has remained a regular visitor to Glanford Park, later documenting his affection for the Iron in his book Scunthorpe Hasta La Muerte("Scunthorpe Until I Die"). Widely regarded as one of the greatest overseas players ever to represent Scunthorpe United, Alex Calvo-Garcia's legacy continues to endure among generations of Iron fans.

IRON AID 2026

Scunthorpe United Football Club is delighted to announce the return of Iron Aid, with a Scunthorpe United Legends side set to take on a Manchester United Legends XI in a special pre-season fixture at the Attis Arena on Sunday, August 2nd (4pm kick-off) as part of a wider event with more details to be released in due course.

The highly anticipated event, organised in partnership with Nor-Lait Promotions, will bring together some of the most iconic names from both clubs' histories for a memorable afternoon of football, nostalgia and fundraising.

Iron supporters will once again have the opportunity to see former fan favourites pull on the claret and blue shirt, while a star-studded Manchester United Legends squad promises to attract supporters from across the region.

The match marks the return of the popular Iron Aid concept, which in 2024, as part of the club's 125h anniversary celebrations, raised significant funds for local charities and community causes, whilst creating unforgettable occasions for supporters of all ages.
