Scunthorpe United go into Saturday’s National League meeting with Woking on the back of a 3-1 win over Boston United in the FA Cup, but they suffered a 2-0 defeat at Fylde in their most recent National League game, which was a match in which they spent long spells on the back foot.
Woking were also beaten on the same afternoon, losing 1-0 at home to Harrogate Town in a much closer contest. Woking finished with 0.95 expected goals to Harrogate Town’s 1.21, each side put three shots on target, and Taylor’s strike after 32 minutes settled it.
Scunthorpe United had 38% possession against Fylde, rising from 30% in the first half to 48% after the break. The bigger problem was getting into dangerous areas to trouble Fylde in that match.
They reached the Fylde penalty area in 13 of their 106 possessions, while Fylde did so on 33 occasions.
Corners offered the best route to goal. Three of their six produced a shot, including a Ross Barrows header worth 0.22 xG, and a James Norwood header just before half-time that was saved. That Norwood effort carried a post-shot xG value of 0.58, and Tyrell Sellars-Fleming forced another save at 0.49 soon after the restart.
At the other end, Maison Campbell made six saves, with five of them being reflex stops.
Woking were a completely different side after half-time against Harrogate Town. Their share of possession went from 41% to 50%, and their average defensive line moved up from 44.8 metres to 56.0.
They produced 0.57 xG in the second half while restricting Harrogate Town to 0.14.
John Marquis carried most of the attacking threat, finishing with 0.52 xG. His left-footed shot on 35 minutes, worth 0.38, was saved, with a post-shot value of 0.50. Roy Syla did a lot of the work behind him, making 17 recoveries, eight of them in Harrogate Town’s half and more than any other player on the pitch.
The frustration for Woking will be their set pieces. They won ten corners and only two led to a shot. Harrogate Town’s winner, meanwhile, came from a chance worth just 0.05 xG.
The contest to watch is John Marquis against the Scunthorpe United centre-backs in the air. Marquis went up for 14 aerial duels against Harrogate Town and won seven, and as a team Woking contested 51 aerial duels in that game.
Stanley Ashbee won all three of his aerial duels against Fylde. Ross Barrows was busy too, blocking three shots and making ten interceptions.
With Woking winning ten corners last time out, the Scunthorpe United defence can expect to be tested at set pieces. The same could apply in reverse, since Woking won 20 of their 51 aerial duels.
Both sides head into this game having lost on 10 October, and will be eager to find a much-needed three points to kickstart their season.
For Scunthorpe United, getting into the Woking penalty area far more often than the 13 times they managed at Fylde looks like the first point of action. Their corners did produce chances, and that could matter against a side that won fewer than half of their aerial duels last time out.
Dealing with Marquis and Woking’s set-piece deliveries will be just as important at the other end, so the battle in the air could go a long way to deciding this one.
