Scunthorpe United’s first team players returned for testing earlier this week, as they took part in VO2 MAX testing at North Lindsey College, in association with UCNL.

First team manager Andy Butler put his players through their paces for the first time in the 2024-25 season, as the 17 contracted players got an insight into how tough the next five weeks will be in the build-up to the Vanarama National League North campaign.

What is the VO2 MAX test?

VO2 MAX measures how much oxygen your body uses while exercising. It's a common tool to understand your fitness level. The more oxygen you inhale, the more energy your body can use. Higher VO2 MAX usually means better physical fitness.

Once the players return to full training on Monday, July 1st, there will be full coverage on our social media platforms and website.

On hand to assist with the testing was Aaron Eastwood, Brett Pearson and Duncan Wood, who we thank for their time over the two days of testing, with each player receiving a 30 minute slot in which to complete the test.

First team manager Andy Butler said: “It was fantastic to see all of the players this week, and to see they’ve all been working hard in the close season to return in good shape, giving them a good starting point for pre-season training which starts on Monday.

“The VO2 MAX testing process means there’s no hiding for anyone. I also took part in the test, and know how tough and enduring it was. I was really pleased with how all of the lads applied themselves, and I’m really looking forward to next week.

“I’d like to thank Aaron, Brett and Duncan for their assistance during the testing, along with UCNL and North Lindsey College for giving us the opportunity to do the testing with them. I’d also like to thank Darryn Stamp for all of his help for getting this set-up, and leads the programme along with Aaron.

Aaron Eastwood, UCNL Programme Leader, Sport and Exercise added: “It was great to welcome the Scunthorpe United squad for two days of pre-season testing recently, which included running body composition, counter movement jump and VO2 MAX.

“The experience was an invaluable one for our students, who were able to tie this into their Physiology and Strength & Conditioning modules.
